Even though we all believe that we know our family members fairly well, we typically don’t anticipate that any of them have a significant amount of unresolved business. The woman who is today’s heroine’s mother discovered that her late mother-in-law was not at all who her family had thought. And shortly after her MIL’s funeral, the woman opened up about her sinister secret.
The woman believes that the circumstances surrounding the diary have left her in a state of disarray.
A 36-year-old anonymous woman has sent a letter to our editorial. She wanted to use this opportunity to share her amazing story and ask our readers for advice on a difficult situation she is currently going through.
“Hello, dear Bright Side, there’s quite a mess I’ve gotten myself into, so I really need advice from other people who will read this,” she wrote at the opening of her letter.
The woman continued, “My MIL passed away three weeks ago, and the entire family has been grieving a lot.” My SIL, FIL, and my ten-year spouse have all been grieving her loss very deeply. I had a fairly cordial relationship with MIL. We weren’t the best of friends, but we also weren’t at each other’s throats.
The woman continues her story, describing how she came upon her mother-in-law’s hidden journal. “After the funeral, my father-in-law asked me to go through his wife’s belongings, and I agreed to do it,” the woman stated. I came across MIL’s very old diary a week ago while going through everything and organizing her belongings. I think she started it in the 1980s.
The woman gave in to the urge to read the diary.
The woman continues, “I know it’s absolutely my fault for being so nosy about other people’s private things,” as she tells her story. However, I had no idea what precisely it was, and this ancient journal didn’t resemble anything else my MIL would have owned.
The woman then began reading the diary, and she was immediately surprised by a number of things.
She remarked, “She wrote about her difficulties with her oldest daughter and how she was acting at the time in this book.” Since my SIL is the youngest member of the family, the timeline also didn’t match, which completely shocked me.
The woman revealed something startling about her mother-in-law.
“It turns out that my mother-in-law had another child,” the woman continues. Furthermore, she wasn’t married to my father-in-law; rather, she was married to someone else. To me, this would have been nothing out of the ordinary, but MIL constantly took pride in having only been married once. She frequently declared that her beloved since they were young children, her lifelong partner, and her only husband.
The woman disclosed, “MIL talked about how she and her ex got tired and that her oldest child never listens to her.” Her mother-in-law was persuaded to enroll their daughter in a “tough love” boot camp by her ex-husband. According to MIL’s writing, it was the worst thing she had ever done. Her daughter returned, “even worse than she had been.” She acknowledged that despite their best efforts to resolve the situation, her daughter fled, and she had not seen her since.
The woman disclosed that she had blamed her ex-husband for everything and had ultimately filed for divorce, but her mother-in-law had kept this information a secret. A photo of her daughter as a teenager and a copy of her birth certificate were located in the back of the book.
The woman is at a loss for what to do with the information she has found out.
The woman disclosed that she is currently inconsolable and feels as though she is carrying a heavy load. She is unsure of how to handle the information she has now learned.
“I mean, my MIL just passed away, and the whole family is grieving so much,” the writer wrote. My mother-in-law’s darkest secret has literally stuck me, and I have no idea what to do or even if I should tell anyone. I’m not sure if I should even tell my father-in-law this information in a surprise. After the death of his wife, I don’t want to aggravate him any further. After all, the man is in his late 80s.
The woman claimed that a lot of people had already given her advice, which she isn’t sure she wants to follow. “Over a few days, I received advice from people in my immediate vicinity,” she stated. Some warned me not to tell my husband everything for fear that I would ruin his family and he would leave. Some said, “I have to tell him, or else he’ll leave me for hiding secrets from him.”
Now in a desperate state, the woman said, “This whole thing had my anxiety running rampant.” I just don’t want to get involved in their personal affairs, but since I’m now the one with the information, it’s up to me to decide whether to share it all or keep it to myself. I feel bad because I know my mother-in-law would have disapproved of my curiosity.
