When Patches, a 40-pound shelter cat, made news about this time last year, people referred to him as “the largest cat anyone has ever seen.”
Following his adoption, Patches started a much-needed weight-loss regimen. How’s he doing, then, today? Continue reading to discover more about his change.
A picture of Patches, who they called “the largest cat anyone has ever seen,” was posted by Richmond Animal Care and Control on April 19, 2023.
Patches had a massive weight of 40.3 pounds. At the time of his initial surrender, his weight was 42 pounds. The record was only missed by a few pounds.
The shelter received a lot of praise and attention online for their description of the obese cat, saying they “love that belly” and “marvel at his gloriously gluttonous body.”
However, it was evident that his enormous bulk was negatively affecting his health, and he needed to lose weight. Patches was given a special diet and exercise regimen by the shelter, and soon he found a new owner who would help him stay healthy.
Since making headlines a year ago, Patches has been working hard to drop those extra pounds. Through her “Patches’ Journey” Facebook page, Patches’ new owner, Kay Ford, has also been keeping followers updated.
“Weigh-in Wednesdays,” a feature that chronicles Patches’ weekly weight loss progress, is one of these updates.
I thought, “Let’s just make this a regular feature and involve everyone in it.” Ford informed WRIC. They’re curious about what’s going on, so let’s tell them what’s happening. It has become the norm to have Wednesday mornings as the day.
Patches has dropped to 25.47 pounds, a significant decrease, according to the most recent weigh-in.
“He makes me so proud. Ford remarked, “He’s lost a whole cat.” “He’s been a true trooper through it all; it’s amazing.”
Along with advice on how to assist their pets lose weight, she also offers advice to other cat owners. Some tips she offers include sticking to a regular meal schedule, avoiding “free feeding,” and closely monitoring the calories and nutrition of their cat food. She also suggests discussing a customized weight loss strategy with your veterinarian.
Although Patches is still pleasantly chubby in photos, he is no longer the extremely obese cat he was a year ago.
Ford posted on Facebook, “It is obvious that he is now happier, more mobile, and playful.”
We are so happy to see that Patches has had such a positive experience with weight loss and that his owner is so kind and encouraging!
