A mother loves her kids very much and wants them to love and care for her too. Larissa’s son didn’t want her to be alone after her husband died, so he asked her to move in with him, his wife, and their kids. Larissa was happy, but the rules her daughter-in-law set surprised her. This is her story.
As soon as my son got married, we gave him our big house. He told me to move in with them to be closer to my grandchildren since my husband died and I’m now living alone.
My son-in-law agreed, but she set some rules. She told him, “If you want to live with us, you have to agree to three things.”
From 8 p.m. on, she said, “First, we have a quiet time policy.” Her voice was calm but firm. This is important for our own relaxation and for the kids’ bedtime routine. Don’t watch TV, use the kitchen, or make loud noises or other disturbances during this time.
I agreed because I knew that routines were important for little kids, but I couldn’t get rid of the feeling that this rule had more to it than met the eye.
Second,” she said with a steady gaze, “we are a vegan family.” That means there are no animal products at all in the house. We’ll have to think about other options if you can’t agree to that.
“Finally,” she said, “I need help around the house, especially with cooking, since I work full-time.” Because I don’t always have time to cook, I’d like you to make vegan meals every night.
To get me started, she gave me a book of vegan recipes.
I love my grandchildren very much, but this seemed too strict and downright rude. I thought I was being hired as a maid at my own son’s house in exchange for a place to stay.
Sincerely,
Larissa Roberta”
