Life can be unpredictable, and in today’s story, a mother wanted to make sure her daughter had some money set aside in case something bad happened. Even though she meant well, she got a surprising response.
She told the story from her point of view.
After three years of marriage, my daughter and her husband just had their first child. He’s been married for a long time, but she’s never worked. Now that she’s a mom, she doesn’t want to go back to work. I agree with you and have been helpful. I also know that she and her husband each have big life insurance policies, so they’ll be okay if one of them dies.
She did, however, sign a prenup. Which, once more, I believe is smart. But my daughter said she would only get a very small settlement.
She probably would have to go back to work even with child support. And after taking some time off from work, who knows if that will be hard. My main worry is that my niece got caught in this, and she had a hard time even with child support.
My husband, who is her father, and I opened an account “just in case.” If she and her husband split up, she will have money set aside in case. It will just be added to what she gets if they stay married after my husband and I die.
Before it happened, I wasn’t going to tell her about it, but my husband said it would be good for her to know she has a Plan B in case she ever wanted to leave but was worried she couldn’t afford to.
We told her, and she was a little shocked. She thanked us, but said she thought we were “rooting against her.” I told her that we love her husband and hope they stay married for a long time. We’ve always been there for you. However, this is like the prenup. As a backup. A last chance.
The wife told her husband, and now he’s mad at us too because we don’t trust him. I told her it was for her safety and wasn’t really different from the prenup. I also said that we’ll always want to protect our daughter, just like he will.
