Mother’s Day is a special day to honor and appreciate moms, but it can also be a place where people fight over misunderstandings and mixed feelings. Just like in Lily’s story, this day meant to honor moms can sometimes bring unexpected drama, like when her family fought or her expectations weren’t met.
Lily’s husband asked his family to come over for Mother’s Day dinner without telling her.
Lily, who is 35 years old, wrote us a heartfelt letter asking for help with the fight between her husband and mother-in-law that had literally torn the family apart.
In the beginning of her letter, she said, “My husband invited his mom over for Mother’s Day dinner without asking me.” I was mad that I had to cook for 10 people and watch two kids at the same time. I didn’t sit down until everyone else did, and even then, the kids kept asking me for things, so I barely had time to eat.
After that, I had to clean up on MY HOLIDAY. My husband always says he’ll clean up later, but the mess is still there the next day. It was really nice to have a day off from making everyone else’s life better. Everyone else didn’t even notice how stressed I was.
When her husband made a toast, things got worse.
Lily went on with her story, “But then something happened that made me really angry.” My husband got up from the table and said, “This is where the most important woman in my life is sitting.” It was her gift to me to live, and it filled my life with light. I could feel my cheeks burning with anger at that very moment. He talked to her like she was the only mom at the table.
“The last straw was when my husband gave his mom a beautiful necklace with a locket on it as a gift.” I had to say something: “Excuse me, but where’s my gift?” At this table, there are two moms. My husband looked like he was shocked, like he hadn’t thought about it.
My mother-in-law spoke up with a smile before he could answer. “Oh dear, you’re too modest,” she said. “Your gift is the happiness of this beautiful family, the joy of being a mother, and the love of your children,” she said in such sweet words.
“That’s when I knew I couldn’t take it any longer.” I got up from the table, my hands shaking with anger, but I didn’t say a word. That’s when I told my MIL, “I’m sorry, but I need some time to myself.” “I believe now is the best time for you to depart.”
Lily worked hard, but no one noticed or thanked her. No one even wished her a happy Mother’s Day.
To end her letter, Lily wrote, “There was silence. It was a heavy, uncomfortable silence that seemed to last forever.” When my husband started to complain, I stopped him. My MIL put her things away and left without saying a word. I felt like tears were going to fall from my eyes. It hit me hard what I had done, but I also felt relieved.
“I didn’t let myself cry until later, when the house was quiet and I was by myself again.” Mother’s Day was supposed to be a happy day, but for me, it turned into a day of anger and frustration. My husband didn’t even think about getting me a gift, it turned out.
The worst part is that neither my husband nor his mom could figure out why I reacted the way I did. My MIL is still mad at me, so she won’t come see us. My family and I are having a hard time right now. Please help me by giving me advice. I need it so badly right now.
