Families can fight and get tense over money sometimes. Julia’s mother-in-law thinks that her husband shouldn’t spend money on Julia’s son, who is not his biological child. This makes things difficult for Julia. Julia was worried when she heard her husband and mother-in-law talking about this matter. She got in touch with us to ask what she should do next.
She doesn’t know what to do.
“I had a son named Mike eight years ago with someone else.” His real father has never been in the picture. Steve and I got married two years ago. He is a wonderful husband and a wonderful father to Mike. But my wife’s mom doesn’t like that her son is taking care of “a stranger’s kid.”
Yesterday, I heard her telling my husband that he should give her the money for Mike’s sports and extracurricular activities instead of paying for them. She needs it more. She reminded him that she has problems with her joints and that massage therapy can help her feel better.
“Mike will never come before you, Mom; you’re my blood,” my husband said in a low voice. He also said, “It’s not my job to pay for the extra things he does, but keep in mind that my wife doesn’t make much money and Mike doesn’t have another dad.” In a way, I feel like I need to take care of him.
Even though my husband fought for us, what he said still hurt me. This man is not supporting my son because he wants to, but because he has to.
Do you know what I should do?
Thank you,
Julia”
