It can be hard to get along with your mother-in-law and sometimes it seems impossible. For a relationship to work, both people have to put in work. But what if your relationship with your in-law, which was once good, suddenly fell apart? We have a story like this today.
How everything began.
“My husband (41M) and I live together (36F).” Compared to many of the bad stories I hear from friends, my relationship with my MIL is pretty good. She’s nice and warm. She does, however, try to control things too much. Too protective? I don’t know the exact word, but she has strong opinions and doesn’t know where the lines are.
When she comes to stay at our house, for example, she takes over the kitchen and makes all of our meals. She cooks great, but she won’t let me help her at all, and she always puts things away in the wrong order and then says her way is better. But she only really comes for vacations, and I love having her here. That’s why I don’t mind putting up with these small gripes.

“Our little girl is due in a few months. I’m pregnant with her.” Thank God for this. It was so late that I didn’t think it would happen, but we were lucky. My MIL was so happy to hear the news that she offered to help us get ready for the baby.
She said she would stay for six months to help out because my husband and I both work long hours and the baby will be hard to take care of. In addition, she cares about this because she really feels like she is part of our family. She got there a few days ago, set up her things, and then began cleaning.

“I like getting things at garage sales and other events.” A lot of people would think about A lot of junk, like small sculptures, books, baskets, and other things. There are too many things in our house, but it’s pretty clean and doesn’t look like the home of a hoarder. On the other hand, my MIL likes everything to be very clean.
When I got home from work yesterday, the house looked like it had been in a fight. Before I got home, she went through my cabinets and got rid of everything she thought was not useful. She then made several trips to Goodwill. I was mad at her and asked her why she would do something like that. She told me that the house needs to be clean for the baby and that my messy house would be “dangerous” for the baby.
“After that, she grabbed the next big bag and tried to leave.” I had enough and told her to leave right away. She was shocked when I told her I was serious. She said she had nowhere to go and it was already very late. It was around 9:30. I called a taxi and booked her a hotel room.
After an hour, my husband came home. When I told him what had happened, he was very angry with me. He tells me I treated his mom badly and wasn’t thankful for all she does for us.
