One coworker can ruin your career sometimes. This is Lisa’s story. Up until one point, she had been a marketing strategist for almost ten years.
In a work meeting, Julia and Lisa got into a big fight.
Lisa had worked at ZenithCorp for almost ten years as a marketing strategist. She was known for being funny and coming up with new ideas. Recently, though, her ability to think quickly went horribly wrong.
Lisa and Julia, a good project manager in her early forties, used to respect each other. Lisa said something stupid about Julia being single at 40 during a tense meeting about a new product launch, which changed everything. Lisa got angry because Julia had just told her that her bold social media plan wasn’t going to work.
Lisa said she was sorry a lot of times.
As Julia got her notes together and left, no one spoke in the room. Lisa felt bad about what she said right away. Things between them became very cold after that.
Lisa tried to say sorry several times, but Julia ignored her each time. Some strange things started to happen after that. Lisa thought she was just stressed at first, but she quickly found out the truth.
Julia tried to stop Lisa from doing her work.
Then strange things began to happen, like making mistakes in my work, losing emails, and having problems with my presentations. I first thought I was just stressed out and making mistakes.
As I worked late one night, I heard the door open. Julie was there. She made a rude comment about how late I was working and then left me with a vague comment that scared me. I knew she was behind all the trouble at that point. But I was stuck because I didn’t have any proof.
Lisa lost her job.
Lisa had a terrible time in the weeks before her performance review. Even though everything was checked twice, problems kept happening. Lisa knew she was in big trouble when her boss called her in twice to talk about how bad her work was getting.
Lisa went into her review with a heavy heart because she knew that her job at ZenithCorp was in danger. Lisa was eventually fired because her boss didn’t believe her that there was evidence of sabotage. Lisa lost her job because Julia was angry at her for making a careless comment. Lisa had to learn the hard way that words have power and can have terrible results.
