Every day, we have to make tough choices that have big effects on our lives. Henry was in this situation when his best friend got married at the same time as his spouse’s birthday party. Henry’s decision to go to the wedding caused unexpected events that made him want to connect with us and tell us about his experience.
“For weeks, my wife has been getting ready for her 37th big birthday party.” There’s just one catch: my best friend is getting married that same day. Even though I begged her many times, she insisted, “I can’t change my birth date.”
“Sorry,” I told her. “You’ll have a birthday every year, but my friend will only get married once.” It was calm and clear to her.
In the evening, while I’m at the wedding, I get a text message from a private number. Reading, “Don’t bother coming home tonight,” made me shake and couldn’t believe my eyes. “Your wife is not going to be there.” I get scared and call my wife over and over, but she doesn’t answer. I leave the wedding party early to check on things at home.
When I get home from the party, my wife is already laughing sarcastically. “I am happy I ruined the night for you just like you ruined my party!” she says with a smirk. “This will teach you never to put someone else ahead of your wife again.”
The way things turned out really shocked me. There’s no way she could understand me, even though I thought she would. In the end, I started to doubt my choice and felt bad about it. Was what I did wrong?
