One of our biggest fears is being made fun of on our wedding day. Sadly, this is exactly what happened to Abby, and her mother-in-law was the one who made things worse. Abby was so mad that she told the mother of her husband to leave the event. She has now come to us for help because she feels lost and upset.
The letter from Abby is here:
“My MIL always thought I wasn’t worth anything and never wanted me for her son.” She didn’t like that my family was much poorer than hers and that my parents had divorced.
I was surprised to see her smiling and chatting with everyone at my wedding. As we were opening gifts at the end of the party, she walked up to me, kissed me on the forehead, and said, “You’ll need these from now on.” Before everyone let out a gasp when I opened her gift, the room was dead quiet.
I felt sick and my blood ran cold when I saw that it was a stack of books that were mean. They were called things like “How to Marry Rich and Keep Him” “How to Make Your Marriage Work If Your Parents Were Bad” and “How to Survive Your Husband’s Cheating.”
Really mad at her, I told her to leave the party in front of everyone. She just smiled and walked away, knowing that my most important day was ruined forever.
My husband says I should try to get along with her again and forgive her, but I can’t.
Am I reacting too much?
Abby”
