Everyone in Kate’s family was very sad before her wedding.

Mark, my brother, and I have always been close. I’ve always had him as an older brother to look out for me and protect me. But things changed between us in the months before my wedding. Sarah, his wife, had been sick with cancer for a long time. We all hoped she would get better, but the illness wouldn’t go away. She died a week before my wedding. The loss was terrible. Mark was broken, and everyone in our family was crying too much.

Kate has always been close with her brother Mark. They became closer as her wedding date got closer, though. Sarah, Mark’s wife, had been sick with cancer for a long time. Even though everyone hoped she would get better, she died just a week before Kate’s wedding.

People from all over the country came to the party, which had been planned for more than a year. She was torn because Sarah, who was like a sister to her, wouldn’t have wanted her to stop living. She didn’t care about herself and thought that life should be celebrated, even when things were sad.

Kate chose not to back out of her wedding.
She didn’t cancel the wedding because she told herself that it would be a tribute to Sarah and a celebration of life and love even though Sarah had died. At first, her parents weren’t sure, but they eventually agreed with her because they knew how important the day was to her. But Mark had a different response. He didn’t say it out loud, but it was clear from the look in his eyes that he was angry and hurt when she told him her decision.

Kate tried to forget about the stress on the wedding day, hoping for a perfect day full of love and happiness, even though the mood was tense. Up until the reception, everything went well. She wrote, “During the toasts, my brother stood up out of the blue. He had been quiet the whole wedding day.” That’s what I thought he was going to do: talk about Sarah. Instead, he did something terrible.

As I expected, he began his speech by saying how sad it was to lose Sarah. Then he turned everyone in the room against me. He told everyone that I had refused to cancel my wedding and that I had chosen to have fun while he was so sad. He said mean, selfish, and heartless things about me. There was complete silence in the room, and everyone was looking at me. I could feel the judgment and hear the rumors that were starting to spread like wildfire.

Mark got the next part of his plan ready.
That wasn’t the worst part, though. As an act of respect for Sarah, Mark had put together a slideshow. Before the pictures played, Kate knew what he had done. The slideshow had pictures of Kate from the past few weeks as well as pictures of Sarah.

Some of the pictures were taken without her knowing, and she looked upset or stressed. Other pictures showed her laughing and smiling with friends. There were even pictures from their last family get-together that showed Kate being happy. It was clear what he meant: how could she be happy while Mark was in pain?

Kate’s wedding turned into a nightmare.

It was a horrible, public shame. Kate couldn’t breathe as her wedding day fell apart all around her. Even though her husband tried to pull her away, she was too ashamed to move. Some guests moved around awkwardly, and others looked at her with disapproval.

When the slideshow was over, Mark left without even staying to see what happened because of what he did. Friends and family of Kate tried to comfort her, but the damage had already been done. The day that should have been the best of her life turned into a nightmare.

Kate stopped getting in touch with her brother.
Kate hasn’t talked to Mark since that day. She’s tried to talk to him, say sorry, and explain herself, but he won’t listen. He thinks she betrayed him in the worst way possible, and Kate isn’t sure if they can ever get back together.

Kate is still married, but her wedding day will always be tainted. She feels guilty and angry every time she thinks about it. She thinks about whether she made the wrong choice, whether she should have put off the wedding, and whether there is a way to make everyone happy. But now there’s no way back.

Moving forward is all she can do now, living with the results of a choice that changed everything.
