No matter how well we plan or guess, we can never really know what will happen. We are often caught off guard by the future, whether it’s through random events or the way people we trust act. Surprises like these aren’t always welcome, but they often teach us important lessons and can even be funny in the long run.

“While I was at work for lunch, I saw my wife there.” It was strange because she texted me 20 minutes ago to say she was home. I was about to call her name, but she was smiling and typing on her phone, so I just watched her.

Then, out of the blue, my phone rang. When I saw it was a picture of her, I stopped moving. She sent me a selfie with a face mask on from her house. “Can’t wait for you to come home!” she wrote. Thanks, xoxo.

I went straight to her table to talk to her, and when she saw me, she turned pale. When I asked her what she was doing there, the waiter walked up to her and gave her bags of food to go. The food was from my favorite restaurant, and she was there to pick it up because she was making a romantic dinner for us that night. Because she wanted me not to guess, she had been so quiet about it.
