Rules from anyone are tough, but they’re really tough when they come from your son’s wife. Jenna’s daughter-in-law thought they were too close and told her to set some limits. She even gave her four strict rules to follow. Jenna was so mad that she looked online for help on how to handle the situation.
The letter from Jenna is here:
“The wife of my son hates how close we are.
She was happy at first when we paid for the house and the wedding. But lately, she’s been telling him, “He has another family now; we need to set limits!”
That’s all I did. But it was the last straw when she told me what to do. These were her four rude rules:
1. No unannounced visits – she says we have to call ahead, even though it’s also our son’s house. Then she says she’s sorry ahead of time and says she can only host us once a week.
2. No babysitting the newborn – won’t let us babysit because she says only her mom can do it because she’s a “nurse” and I’m not. It’s silly!
3. No staying over – We sometimes stay in their spare room on weekends because of the distance, but she wants to stop that because she says long visits are “overwhelming” for her.
4. No holiday expectations – She says she feels “pressured” to spend every holiday with us, even though it’s been a family tradition for years. They now want to look into other options, mostly spending time with her parents.
I was very angry. She clearly doesn’t want my son to be around us. The worst part is that he seems to agree with her. I no longer recognize him!
In what way should I act?
Jenna”
