My mother-in-law gave away my cats in secret, so I got the best revenge.

Alana believed everything was okay. Bella and Max, her cats, had lived with her for years, even though Adam, her husband, had mild allergies to them. But when she got home from a short business trip, the house was eerily quiet because her pets were gone. Adam’s mom had been staying with them and said they “ran away.” Alana knew something wasn’t right, though.

Alana wrote to us.

Hey there! I didn’t think I’d be writing to you one day, but here I am.

I had two cats named Bella and Max before I got married. My husband and I have been married for two years. They’re like family to me because they’ve been with me for over ten years. They’ve always made my husband Adam sick, but we’ve been able to control his symptoms with medicine. It was never his favorite thing to have them around, but he knew I couldn’t just get rid of them after all these years.

Adam suggested a few times that we find them a new home so he wouldn’t have to deal with the allergies, but I always said no. I wasn’t going to give them away because they were my babies.

Susan, my mother-in-law, moved in with us not long ago. It was only for a short time while her house was being fixed up. The deal was for one or two months, and I didn’t think much of it at first.

But things got tougher when I had to go on a short business trip. Before I left, I made sure that everything was ready for Bella and Max. I also gave Adam and Susan clear instructions. I thought everything would be okay.

I knew the cats were gone when I got back from a business trip.

I asked Adam and Susan right away where they were, and Susan looked eerily calm. My MIL said the cats must have gotten away. That wasn’t making sense. My cats never tried to go outside; they always stayed inside.

I asked her more questions, but she ignored me and said it was likely that they got out while the door was open. I was sure something wasn’t right, and she finally admitted it after I pushed her harder. They were given away by my MIL.

I was so angry that I could barely stand. How could she do that? Those were my cats! She flat-out wouldn’t tell me where she took them. All she kept saying was that they were in “good hands,” as if that would make me feel better.

I looked at Adam and thought he would be as shocked as I was, but I could tell from the look on his face that he wasn’t. He knew. She went on anyway. A wave of betrayal went through me. Both of them had broken my trust by taking something important from me behind my back.

I went up to the MIL and told her to give back my pets, but Susan refused. Then I decided to do something very bad: I stopped giving Susan money, which is what my husband and I had been doing to help her with her renovations. She had no other choice but to tell the truth because she had run out of options. Bella and Max were then brought back home.

I still don’t know what to do next, though. Not only the cats, but also trust, respect, and the fact that I know they didn’t have the right to make this choice for me. Now I’m not sure if things will ever be the same with Adam. What should I do?

Kind regards,
Alana”
