It can be hard to pick a name for your child when you want to make everyone happy. Friends or family may take on some names, while others may be linked to people who are no longer welcome in the family. This new mom didn’t tell anyone her daughter’s name until the very last minute, but what happened may change her life forever.
The name she chose for her daughter caused a lot of trouble in the family, even though she had tried to keep the name a secret to avoid that.
“I 26F just had my daughter Annabelle.” I didn’t tell anyone ahead of time because someone in my family stole a baby’s name once, which caused a lot of trouble. My mom was interested, but I was determined to keep it a secret.
They were in the room with me when I gave birth. When it was time for me to sign the birth record, my mom asked what the name was, and I told her it was Annabelle. My dad didn’t look too happy, but he said he loved the name. Her face turned pale. After a few minutes, my mom said she wasn’t feeling well and left. She said she’d help with the baby in a few days.
“My mom hasn’t talked to me that much since I’ve been home with the baby.” I didn’t understand why they were acting this way when we used to talk every day. I called my sister Emily over to talk because she still lives with my mom.
When she got to my house, she told me that she had heard my dad and mom fighting because dad had an affair with a coworker named Annabelle about ten years ago. There has been no talk between them, but he has been trying to get her to talk. I guess Dad chose to come over himself when he found out that Emily had come over.
“He asked me if I could change Annabelle’s name in any way.” I wanted to know the truth, so I asked him why. Plus, he told her about the affair. He begged his mom not to leave him, and she did, but she always felt bad when she heard that name. I told him I couldn’t and that she was named Annabelle and was my husband’s grandma. She helped raise him.
It was so important to my dad that I change it, because my mom was packing her bags to go to her sister’s house. That her name means a lot to my husband and me, so I told him I wouldn’t change it.
When he raised his voice, my sister yelled back and told him to leave right away. He should not worry me about the mess he made, she told him. He left right away. If I don’t change my baby’s name, I think this will break up my family. What should I do?”
