My husband’s dark secret was discovered at a family dinner after 20 years of hiding it from me.

Sarah, 39, has always been happy with her marriage, which is almost perfect. Things got even better for the woman when her husband got the job of his dreams and the family moved to a nicer place to live. But one small thing that the couple’s daughter said changed their whole family’s life upside down. Sarah wrote an email to the internet and asked them to tell her what they really thought about her problem.

Sarah and Alan had never really had a problem or a trust issue.

Sarah, who is 39 years old, told us her crazy story. We thought that things like Sarah’s could only happen in scary movies and books before we read her letter. But her case seemed to show that life can be a crazy director at times, and some people’s stories are so interesting that they would make any fiction writer jealous.

Sarah said, “Hi!” when she opened her letter. I’m writing to tell you my story because I still can’t believe what’s been going on with my family. Alan, my husband, and I have known each other since we were both 13 years old. We met when we were 18 and got married when we were 19. Really, I thought I knew everything about my husband. Since we got married 20 years ago, we’ve always been more like husband and wife than husband and wife. We were meant to be together.

We’ve never had a problem with trust. In our family, sharing the truth and nothing but the truth has always been the most important thing. To be honest, I thought my family had always been a good example to follow. But I’m not sure now.”

Sarah didn’t know much about Alan’s family.

After Sarah’s first sentence, Alan and I have a daughter named Lily who is eight years old. She has grown up with lots of love and care, but there has always been one thing that makes our family picture less than perfect.

“Lily has always asked my dad and me about her grandmother and grandfather.” She saw that most of her friends had two sets of grandparents and were getting twice as much love, but she only knew her grandparents from my side. Alan’s parents were her paternal grandparents. She only met them a few times, when she was two years old, and her dad stopped talking about them or meeting them after that.

Sarah wrote, “I only met Alan’s parents a few times while we were dating and then married.” I knew Alan had a tough time getting along with his parents, but he never talked about why. I accepted his privacy and never forced him to tell me anything about their complicated relationship.

Sarah’s secret was revealed when Lily said something.

“We just moved to a new city because my husband got a new job,” Sarah says next in her story. Lily, our 8-year-old daughter, was telling us about her first day at a new school. My child told me that her new teacher was “so cool,” and that her dad had a picture of her in his pocket.
When my husband heard that, he choked on his tea and turned very pale. “What?” “Which picture?” he asked, coughing hard. Lily chirped, “Daddy, I saw that picture of my math teacher, Ms. Roberts, in your wallet!”

I felt like something was very, very wrong when Sarah wrote, “The situation was awkward.” I tried to stay cool, though, and asked, “Darling, can you show it to us after dinner?”
Dinner was a mess. I couldn’t help but look at my partner, who looked very nervous. After that, we went with Lily to Alan’s study. Alan’s wallet was in his drawer when my daughter took it. The picture inside showed a woman with very nice eyes and a very familiar smile.

Alan’s sad and dark secret was finally told.

Sarah wrote, “While Lily was getting ready for music class, I talked to Alan about what was going on with the new teacher and that picture.” After lying to me for an hour, my husband finally told me the truth.
Alan’s parents were not his real parents; he was adopted when he was 3 years old. He lost his little sister Janett after he was adopted. Alan and Janett were split up. They took my husband in and adopted him. He never saw his sister Janet again.

When Alan met Janett three years ago, he told her who he was and that she was his sister. As soon as they met, they became very close. Alan worked hard to get promoted at work and move closer to where Janett lived and worked so that they could stay close.

Sarah wrote, “I know I should be happy for my partner, but I feel empty and unloved.” I didn’t know that Alan was adopted and I had no idea that he had a sister because he never told me anything about his family. I feel like I’m taking away from his happiness by being insulted by his privacy, but I just can’t get over how disgusting it is to be lied to and put down.
For twenty years of our marriage, Alan has kept this secret from me. It makes me feel like I’m not important enough for him. How should I deal with this situation and how it makes me feel?”
