Authors often get ideas for their stories from things they’ve seen or read, and they add new plots and characters to make the stories more interesting. Life has already given some people a story that sounds like it came straight out of a book.

1. “I told my brother hello on the phone. When I answered, a voice said “hi” and carried on the conversation we were having in person. The voice was familiar to me. It was mine. It asked me what I said after I said something.

2. I lived in a small one-bedroom apartment under a house. When my cat walked by the bedroom door, she stopped, fluffed up her fur, and hissed. She then looked at the wall above my head. While still being fluffy, she slowly moved to the side and stared at the spot above my head. There was nothing there when I looked up.
She ran as soon as she got close to the door frame. As I walked past the TV to see if she was okay, it switched from its channel to static. I went out with my cat because she really wanted to! After scolding myself, I opened the door to go back inside. As soon as I took a step inside, the TV went back to static.

3. “Late at night, I heard faint whispers coming from an empty room. It was one of the creepiest things I’ve ever experienced.” It felt like someone was breathing down my neck right behind me. When I turned around, there was no one there at all. I couldn’t get rid of the feeling that I wasn’t alone, and the air felt heavy. 4. “For a short time, I rented a house in a small Florida town that was owned by a church and was built in 1908.” Around 8 p.m. every night, I heard heavy, shuffling footsteps coming from the kitchen. They would stop when I walked into the kitchen or when I turned my head from the den to look into the kitchen. They would start again as soon as I turned my head away. 5. I remember a kid in my class, but no one else does. I have a clear memory of playing with this kid in kindergarten. We were always together. He didn’t show up for about a month after Christmas break. No one could remember him. Neither the teachers nor the other kids in my class. Nobody.

6. “The night before my birthday in 1996, I had a dream that I was walking near the top of Everest.” Even though it was snowing hard, I felt fine. There was a tent. I sang “Goober Peas” to let people know I was there. The two men inside were scared, so I tried to make them feel better. I stayed with them and helped them feel better.
