Obama’s scathing jab at Donald Trump following his decision to block Harvard funding

Obama Backs Harvard in Clash with Trump Over Academic Freedom

Barack Obama has weighed in on the growing battle between Harvard University and Donald Trump’s administration, firmly siding with his alma mater amid a federal funding freeze and accusations of political overreach.

Speaking at Hamilton College, Obama didn’t hold back:
“I have deep differences of opinion with my most immediate successor — who’s now president once again.”

Tensions escalated after the Department of Education froze $2.3 billion in federal funds for Harvard. The Trump administration demanded the school dismantle its diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, restrict campus protests, overhaul hiring and admissions, and limit the power of “activist” faculty.

Harvard refused.

President Alan M. Garber declared:
“The University will not surrender its independence or its constitutional rights.”

Obama, a graduate of Harvard Law School, showed support on social media:

“Harvard has set an example… rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom… Let’s hope other institutions follow suit.”

This standoff has sparked a national debate—not just about antisemitism or protests, but about the future of higher education and who holds the power to shape it.

With Obama now entering the fray, the pressure is mounting for other universities to take a stand.
