All 21 of the pups that a mother dog lost after she was dumped at a sanctuary due to labor issues
After the dog had been in labor for twenty-four hours, someone dropped her off at the Boone Location Humane Society.
Thankfully, she was stabilized after an emergency C-section and two codes after the procedure. In the ICU of Iowa State’s College of Veterinary Medicine, she received a blood transfusion and underwent meticulous examination.
“The ISU veterinarians also informed us that this is an elderly dog who has given birth to multiple litters of puppies in the past,” the Boone Area Humane Society said on Facebook.
She was reared and then abandoned when she had difficulties giving birth, when she ought to be enjoying her golden years.
Despite vets’ best efforts, the mother dog was able to give birth to 21 pups; sadly, all of them have now passed away.
There is no possibility that the 21 puppies had adequate nutrition when they were in the womb since they were all underdeveloped.
The mother dog, who goes by Ruthie now, is continuing to develop; she is eating by herself and getting up to go outdoors. Her kind nature has won her over, and she left the hospital to take care of her new foster home, where she will continue to rehabilitate.
The Humane Society is making every effort to pursue legal action against the individual who allowed Ruthie to suffer in the meantime, but they note that due to Iowa’s lax pet security regulations, the fight is never won.
