Having a peaceful home may be hard to achieve when an unwanted family member comes to visit. Clara came to us for help because her husband said he wanted his mother to move in, which Clara thinks will make their peaceful life difficult. In a tough situation, Clara is in because her husband has given her an ultimatum.
This is Clara’s letter.
“My mother-in-law lost her husband not long ago.” My husband asked her to move in with us because he is her only son. She is nosy and bossy, and she hates my two kids who aren’t her son’s.
I told her I didn’t want her to live with me. She said, “Well, if you don’t accept, then your mother won’t be coming for dinner three days a week!” My husband laughed.
He then said, “Also, your mother is not allowed to leave her things in our guest room,” which scared me. Even though she doesn’t live with us, having all of her things around the house makes it feel like she does.
These words broke my heart. My mom does visit often, but she never lived with us. And most importantly, my mom isn’t a bother like his mom is.
My mom is nice, always willing to help, and makes our family feel good. This is not like my mother-in-law at all.
This makes me think that my husband is forcing me to let his mom live with us, and I can’t stand it.
What should I do?
Thanks, Clara”
