Life often brings us to unexpected forks in the road where we have to make tough choices. Thomas recently had to deal with a similar problem and has turned to the Internet for help. It was the biggest secret his wife had ever kept.

Some years ago, we got a letter that said it was from a girl who said she was my wife’s daughter and was addressed to my wife and me. I wasn’t totally shocked. When she was younger, my wife told me she gave up a child for adoption. However, the fact that there was no adoption at all struck me as strange. She had instead left the baby with the father and stopped being in their lives.

A couple was married a few years ago and got a strange letter in the mail. It was from a woman who said she was the wife’s long-lost daughter Kate. The husband had no idea that such a secret would come out, especially since his wife had told him about her past. She let someone adopt a child when she was younger.

But what was written in the letter broke down any ideas he had. She didn’t adopt the child; instead, she left the child with the father and disappeared from their lives.

His wife didn’t want to tell anyone that her daughter wanted to get back together with him.

The husband found a lost letter while looking deeper into the past. Written by Kate when she was twelve years old, it begged the wife for help. He was shocked to find that the response was cruel, blaming Kate for her own problems and telling her not to bother their family any more.

The husband was shocked by what he learned. Years of lying to him and leaving him had tangled up all of his feelings in a way that seemed impossible to unravel. He didn’t understand how his wife could be so mean to her daughter.

After years of therapy, one more problem came to light.

In the years that followed, they slowly got back in touch with Kate, using therapy to work through their feelings of anger and mistrust. Even though things were getting better, they hadn’t told their kids about Kate because they didn’t know how to bring it up.

Now that there was a family meeting coming up, things got worse in the house. His wife, Kate, and even his parents, who knew the truth, pushed for making Kate seem like a family friend so that the kids wouldn’t have to deal with the complicated parts of their past.

He wouldn’t keep lying.

But more lies were too much for the husband to handle. He wouldn’t take part in the lie because he was sure that their kids deserved to know the truth about their family history. As the fights went on, he felt alone in his beliefs, torn between loving his wife and being sure that being honest was always the best thing to do.
