It should be a happy and loving holiday for moms, but Romy’s Mother’s Day was stressful because she wasn’t allowed to join the party because she was a stepmom. Because she is the biological mother, her mother-in-law would rather invite her ex-wife. Romy, the caring stepmother, was hurt very badly and wrote to us to ask for help.
This is Romy’s letter:
“Just because I’m the stepmom, my mother-in-law didn’t invite me to brunch with her three other daughters-in-law for Mother’s Day last week.” He has a son with his ex-wife, and I later learned that she invited her because she’ll always be her “grandson’s mother.”
I was angry and hurt because I have been a loving stepmom to my 11-year-old stepson for seven years, even though I don’t have any kids of my own. What my husband said after I told him what happened made things worse. He looked at me and said, “Let’s be honest: you will never be as important to my family as my ex.” “A mother will always be first.”
These words hurt even now. Should my mother-in-law honor the mother of her grandson on Mother’s Day? Am I being too sensitive?
Yours,
Romy”
