Work is important to all of us, and we all hope things go well there. But the truth is that things do happen. Workers are sometimes not given the bonus they were promised or asked to do extra work for someone else without much notice. A lot of the time, it’s just the way things are.
“Monday through Friday, I work 40 hours, and my company doesn’t pay extra for extra hours.” He told me to work less during the week so I could spend three hours at an event he rented in a different city. I told him right away I couldn’t commit. He told me I didn’t need to worry about it because he would drive me (I usually take the bus, which makes traveling on Saturdays hard and free).
He joked, “Yeah, you have SUCH an interesting life,” when I told him I had a life outside of work. After that, he left. He wants me to work that Saturday, but I don’t feel like it, so I’m not going to show up. Through Reddit, glassesandbodylotion
“I recently started working at a medical practice with goals to work in the field. I quickly learned how to do my job and made the department run more smoothly.” But the doctor, despite being very good at his job, was narcissistic. He didn’t help anyone, was too focused on details, and didn’t listen to constructive criticism.
I found a better job opportunity elsewhere, but when I quit, I was met with resistance and told I had to finish a week’s worth of work in two days or face being threatened with harm at my new job. I’m angry, so I’m going to finish the tasks to avoid a fight. I’m also looking for a way to show how I feel without hurting my chances of getting ahead in life. It’s JKTurtleSwag on Reddit.
“My boss said I could only take 5 business days off because it would not be fair to other employees when I asked for time off for my upcoming trip to Europe.” Everyone else in the office didn’t mind that I planned to take some time off, though, and the office is always full during the slow season. Even after I told my boss this, he was still adamant, which is frustrating because I can’t afford to quit. It’s hard to understand how a week and a half of leave could have such a big effect on my job when other people have taken similar amounts of time off without any problems. “I quit my job yesterday because my boss lied about when my shift ended and got mad when I told her she was wrong.” I told her she had to let me know 24 hours in advance because my schedule hadn’t changed. She yelled my name, followed me, grabbed my backpack, didn’t care that I asked for space, and told me I wouldn’t get paid. She even stood in front of the door and yelled, “This isn’t over!” before she let me go. I told the owner about what happened, but he said it wasn’t important and suggested we have a meeting instead, so I quit. Stories of Odysseus on Reddit
“The way my boss acts is unacceptable. I work in Environmental Services at a hospital.” I pushed my cleaning cart outside in the snow and freezing weather while leaving my coffee cup on a shelf. This made him mad. He used a Sharpie to write something embarrassing on my cup. I get paid $22 an hour for this work, but the rudeness is not worth it. Today I began looking for new job opportunities. Strange_Shallot1929 on Reddit
“As the director of my organization, I’m always working on a lot of different projects and helping my team.” But today, the CEO told me he couldn’t believe how much work I had and asked what effect I had on the company. Knowing how dedicated I was to my role, this came as a surprise.
Even though it made me feel bad, I explained my plans without making fun of my coworkers. Going forward, I’m thinking about how to deal with this impression while still being professional and speaking up for myself. It’s disappointing, but I’m determined to handle this in a positive way. “I was sick of this restaurant’s toxic and sexist atmosphere after working there for almost a year.” Today, I was going to send in a job application somewhere else, but my boss found it in my purse. This caused a fight, and I was fired right away for complaining. I feel violated and angry, and I want to know if what he did was legal and if I have any options, since I had never been officially reprimanded before. I’m bluebrindleivy on Reddit.
