When we get married, we expect our partner to be there for us through good times and bad. Reality, on the other hand, often differs from what we expect, and a partner’s true nature can become clear during times of major trouble. This is what happened to our heroine today: she found out that her husband planned to use her money to get rich while she was broke. Things didn’t go as planned, though, and he ended up without anything.

A woman wrote to tell us about her trouble with her inheritance.

A 37-year-old woman named Sarah wrote to us and began her letter by telling us about herself. She said that her father had died not long ago and that she is still sad about it because she had a close relationship with him. She was raised by him alone after Sarah’s mother died when he was only 20 years old.

Sarah said that her famous and successful lawyer dad was often in the news and well known by many people. He was so good that he won many cases that even the most experienced lawyers thought were hopeless. His many students called him “a wizard” and “a genius,” as he was a master from whom many learned.

Sarah’s dad was very wealthy, which is not a surprise given how skilled he was. A lot of big law firms, homes, and cars made up his nearly $1 billion net worth.

Sarah’s father taught her a unique way to think about money and wealth.

As a single parent, Sarah’s dad worked hard to teach his daughter his strong morals. One important thing he taught me was how to handle money. Sarah talked about how he taught her to be humble and save money. Even though they had everything they needed, she was taught to never show off how lucky they were.

Sarah said, “I went to a normal school and then started law school without my dad getting in the way.” It was so clear that he wanted me to follow his steps and start at the bottom and work my way up. He wouldn’t even help me study for my entrance exams.

His daughter graduated with honors and got a job at a small law firm. Her father was very proud of her. He told her again that she had to make her own way to success when he turned down her job offer at one of his big companies.

Also, Sarah said, “My dad was famous, but I never went on TV or radio shows with him.” His perfect reputation and great skills were his alone, and I never said anything about it. I got his point of view. His goal was for my future to depend on me, not on his wealth or legacy, after he was gone.

Sarah’s dad had doubts about her boyfriend, but he didn’t get involved in their relationship.

When Sarah started going out with Bradd, a fellow college student, her father wasn’t sure about the young man. He asked Bradd a lot of questions at their first meeting because he didn’t have enough “personal check.”

Sarah remembers, “My dad always told me that Bradd was a lazy, spoiled brat who was always interested in my dad’s fame and money.” But I just thought it was my dad being protective, and while I appreciated it, I didn’t give his worries about Bradd much thought.

Bradd, on the other hand, never brought up money when he was talking to Sarah, which made her even more sure that he had good intentions. The couple got married a year before her father died, and it looked like they were having a great time together at work and in their personal lives. They both worked hard at their jobs and enjoyed it.

After Sarah’s father died, things changed in a way that no one saw coming.

Following the death of Sarah’s father, she was filled with deep grief. But she was surprised by Bradd’s strange behavior during this tough time. Sarah said, “Instead of offering comfort and support during my overwhelming sorrow, Bradd immediately broached the subject of my inheritance, asking about the extent of my expected wealth after my father’s demise.”

This question shocked her and made her think of how her father had warned her about Bradd’s true intentions and how he was only interested in her for her dad’s money.

“When he asked about my inheritance, my face must have shown that I was shocked,” Sarah explained. “What inheritance?” I asked. My dad isn’t going to give me any money. I’m not even mentioned in his will.””

Bradd thought she was making senseless noise because it was a joke or because she was upset from the funeral. Sarah replied, “I won’t get any of the money because I’m not my dad’s biological daughter.” I was adopted a year before my mom died. My dad raised me like I was his own, but he never planned to leave me anything in his will. This is something I’ve always known.

There was no sign of Bradd after hearing Sarah’s “bad news.”

In the next part of Sarah’s story, she says that Bradd filed for divorce just one month after she found out that she wouldn’t be getting any money from her father. After they got divorced, Sarah set up a meeting with Bradd with a family friend who used to work with her dad in business.

During dinner, the dad’s partner gave Bradd the will of Sarah’s father. It said that Bradd would get half of the estate if he stayed married to Sarah for five years after her father died. Sarah would get the other half. But if they got a divorce, Sarah would be the only one who could inherit her father’s money and property.

In her closing remarks, Sarah talked about how happy she was, saying, “It was immensely satisfying to witness my ex’s shocked reaction.” His face went from being pale to red to pale again. He couldn’t say a word, like a fish out of water gasping for air. My dad could finally rest easy knowing that I was doing well without that “lazy, spoiled kid” in my life. I felt like his plan had come true.
