An HR person told me the job was filled, so I wrote an angry letter and got an amazing response.

Recently, John sent us an interesting story about how he set out to find his dream job but instead ended up on an unexpected journey of personal growth and discovery. John started his search with the goal of getting a highly sought-after job, but his search took an unexpected turn that led him to a path full of life lessons and enriching experiences.

John really wanted this job, but he got a letter telling him he wasn’t getting it.

Sometimes, we have to try several times before we find the best job opportunities for us. Every experience teaches us something useful that makes us better at what we do and raises our chances of success.

John had always wanted to work for a well-known company, so when the chance came up, he quickly applied for the job. He worked hard to prepare for the interview for a whole week, and the recruiter seemed genuinely interested in his background and skills. The recruiter even said he hoped to see John again, which made John feel good.

But about a week ago, John got a disappointing email from the recruiter telling him that the job was no longer open. John had put a lot of time and effort into getting ready for what he thought would be his dream job, so this news came as a shock.

John decided to look at a job site this morning, even though he was still hurting from being turned down. He was shocked and angry to see that the same position had been posted again just two days before. He decided to send a response to the recruiter because he felt confused and lied to:

Hi John,

Thank you for giving me the chance to interview for the job. It had been a long time since I had this job, and I spent a week getting ready for the interview. I thought I was a good candidate during our meeting because you were interested in my background and skills and even said you hoped to see me again.

Because of this, I don’t understand why you told me the job was no longer open when I just found it posted again on a job site two days ago. I don’t know if this is how they usually tell applicants they didn’t get the job or if the job really was filled after my interview.

This is especially disappointing because of the way things are now, where hiring and recruitment managers are not always honest. I had hoped that your company would be more open about the status of the job. It is disappointing to see this lack of openness, which hurts the trust and respect between employers and potential employees.

I wish you the best of luck in your search for the right person, but I no longer want to be considered for the job.

The answer John got from the company he applied to was unexpected.
It had been a week, and John had almost forgotten about what had happened. He was still looking for work. Then, out of the blue, he got a message from the recruiter he had interviewed with.

The letter was nice, but it caught him off guard. It showed that they were going to ask him to come in for a second interview because they liked his qualifications so much. What made John angry, though, was the reason the job was closed.

Thanks for your honest answer. I really admire how hard you’re working to prepare for the role. The email that said “position closed” was just a lie to hide the truth.

Not to be silly, but the position was temporarily closed while the company reorganized, but it has now been reopened. We were going to ask you to come in for a second interview because we were so impressed with your qualifications. We won’t bother you anymore, though, since you’ve changed your mind.

We care about being honest and want to get better at talking to each other. We’ve taken note of your comments and are sorry for any confusion they may have caused. We hope everything goes well for you in the future.
