A job applicant turned me down because I didn’t wear makeup.

Job interviews can make you feel a lot of different things, from fear to excitement. It takes you a long time to make the perfect resume, learn about the company, and practice answers for interviews. One woman’s big day had come. When she walked into the interview room, sure of her skills and experience and ready to make a good impression, someone raised an eyebrow and said something mean about how she looked.

She told us her story.

“I put in an application for an office manager job and set up a time for an interview.” I don’t like putting on makeup because it makes my skin breakout so easily. I chose to go to the interview without it, but I made sure I looked nice and got a new haircut.

The interviewers looked me over several times and then asked, “You do know you’ll have to work with people, right?” They looked at each other after I said yes. Their words after 7 minutes were, “Thank you, we’ll call you later.”

What was needed was exactly what I had in terms of experience and skills. When they called me later, though, a woman told me I wasn’t right for the job. I felt hurt and asked why. She told me it was because I hadn’t worn makeup, which surprised me. They thought that dressing like that for a job interview was lazy, and they didn’t want a boss who “neglected their appearance.” I was shocked.”
