It’s hard to picture our kids coming back once they leave the nest. It happened to Claudia’s stepdaughter, though. She lost her job and had to move back in. She wouldn’t do it unless her stepdaughter agreed to pay the rent. This caused a lot of stress in the family and made things worse. Claudia wrote to us when she was upset and asked for help.
This is her letter:
She lost her job and wants to move back in with us. She is 32 years old. She is lazy and always takes advantage of her dad’s help. I told her she would have to pay rent to stay here since her dad’s house isn’t a free hotel!
She laughed and then yelled, “You’re wrong!” You have no say in this; this is MY dad’s house!”
“Then get rid of your mom’s stuff from the spare room and make room for my daughter,” her dad told me when I told him. To my horror, he said, “Your mother comes and stays with us every once in a while, rent-free, so why shouldn’t my own daughter be allowed to?”
I told him that my mom would only be there for a day or two and that his daughter was a shady person who would get free rent and never leave again. He wouldn’t listen to me, though.
It makes me feel like a stranger is in my own house, insulting me. What should I do?
Thank you, Claudia”
