My stepdaughter’s mother is now yelling at me because I won’t make her separate gluten-free meals.

As hard as it is to keep a family healthy when there are stepparents and children involved, family relationships are rarely simple. A woman on Reddit talked about how hard it was for her with her stepdaughter’s diet and how she felt about it. She also asked herself if what she did was wrong. Our story has the whole story.

What did the event happen?

The fifteen-year-old daughter of my ex-husband has been living with us every week for the past year and has been picky about what she eats. When she first became vegan, I made sure she was happy by making meals without any animal products. She quickly switched to a holistic diet, though, and started to be allergic to many foods.

My stepdaughter can’t eat gluten or lactose. She wants me to keep her food and cooking tools separate, and she even threw out things from the pantry that she thought were giving her stomach pain. That made her mad that I told her to eat out or cook and clean for herself. For that reason, my husband began to yell at me.

It was found that she did not have any allergies after it was suggested that she get professional help for her eating problems. Even so, she stuck to what she believed. When I finally lost it, I started adding gluten and lactose to her food, which she ate without any problems. When her mom came over and said how great it was that her daughter’s health had gotten better because of her new diet, I calmly told her that she had been eating the same food as the rest of us.

Being aware of that caused a fight, which ended with my stepdaughter and her mother leaving. My husband was mad at me because she wouldn’t stay with us anymore. He can leave if he wants his daughter to live with him, I told him. Since then, they’ve sued, but I stand by what I did. I won’t give in to the demands of a teenager with mental health problems, and if she comes back, I won’t say sorry or make any changes for her.

As a nurse who works long hours, I don’t have the time or energy to meet the unreasonable needs of someone who has false beliefs about food. Do I have it wrong?
