Trust, honesty, and helping each other out are important in relationships. Yet, the people we trust the most can sometimes be the ones who keep secrets from us that turn our world upside down. Imagine finding out that your dad has been sending your wife large amounts of money every month without your knowledge. In this story, a secret deal broke the foundation of our reader’s relationship, forcing him to face a betrayal that had been building for years without him knowing about it.
Their marriage was strong until the husband noticed that his wife was acting differently.
“I always thought that trust and love were what made my marriage to Linda strong.” We had been married for three years and together for six. I thought I was hers, and she was my rock through good times and bad. But things that you don’t expect can turn your world upside down sometimes.
“It all began one quiet evening when I saw Linda acting funny.” It looked like she was waiting for something while she kept looking at her phone while we watched TV. When she said she had to go take a call in the other room, I became interested. In that week, she had done that three times, which wasn’t like her at all.
“When she came back, I asked her informally who it was.” She didn’t pay attention to it because she thought it was her friend Samantha who needed help. I wished to believe her, but something didn’t seem right. The next night, while she slept, I lay awake, feeling more and more uneasy. What did she hide?”
He decided to look at her phone, and what he found shocked him.
“A few days later, I looked at Linda’s phone while she was out grocery shopping.” Even though I knew it was a breach of trust, I had a strong sense that something was wrong. The conversation thread with Samantha seemed harmless at first, but then I came across a string of bank transaction alerts.
“My dad’s account sent money to Linda’s account every month.” I was shocked. The amounts were different, but they were all pretty big, between $2,000 and $5,000. These payments had been made for a long time, almost since the start of our relationship. Then why would my dad send money to my wife? My mind went quickly over a hundred possible outcomes, each one more worrying than the last.
“I chose to talk to my dad first.” He lived in the house where I grew up, about an hour away. As I drove there, my mind was a mess of doubt and confusion.
He didn’t think his father would betray him in such a way.
The only thing I could say was, “Dad, I need to ask you something.” He looked up with a shocked look on his face. I took a big breath. “Why does Linda keep getting money every month?”
“He finally broke down and said, ‘It’s time you knew, but you should sit down.'” We’ve been paying Linda’s debts in secret for three years. She came to me a few years ago. She meant for you to break up with her. She was stressed out about her student loans and didn’t want you to get involved in her money problems. She believed it was proper to end things.
“My mind was spinning. Linda, do you want to leave me? It hit me hard.
I knew how much you loved her and how sad it would make you if she left. I promised her that I would help her pay off her student loans if she stayed with you. He said, “I started sending her monthly payments in the hopes that they would give her the financial security she needed to stay in the relationship.”
The man thought his dad had bought him a wife.
“A rush of anger, betrayal, and disbelief hit me.” He paid her to stay with me. He quickly said, “It wasn’t a bribe.” It seemed like it would give her a chance to clear her mind and focus on you without having to worry about her debts. It seemed to be good for both of you.
“I suddenly stood up because I couldn’t take it any longer.” “Dad, you messed up my marriage.” You bought her love. Why do you think that will help?”
“I drove home in a daze after leaving him there, where he looked broken and defeated.” When I burst through the door, Linda was in the living room. Her face showed right away that she was worried.
“I know about the money,” I said, but my voice was shaking. “My dad told me everything.”
Cindy’s face turned white. She sat down on the couch with tears running down her face.
The man had to make the hardest choice of his life.
“I didn’t mean to hurt you.” My debts scared and stressed me out. I had no idea what to do. The offer from your dad looked like it could save you. She spoke with a shaking voice, “I thought I could make it work, that I could love you without feeling bad about my money.”
“You were going to leave me.” You agreed to talk to my dad instead of me, right? “You built our marriage on a lie,” I told him as I realized it more deeply.
“I told myself I would keep you safe.” I believed that I could handle it, and everything would be fine. I was wrong, though. “You should have been honest from the start and earned my trust,” she sobbed.
“The words she spoke hung in the air, and there was a heavy silence after them.” I couldn’t look at her because I couldn’t connect the love I had for her with the betrayal I was facing. After that, the days were a blur of pain and thought. I felt betrayed by both Linda and my dad, and I couldn’t get rid of that feeling.
“I filed for divorce with a heavy heart.” Making that choice was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. What would you have done if you were me? However, my wife is still trying to get in touch with me, show that she loves me, and fix our split. I love her too, but I can’t get over what happened. Should I try to save what we have and start over? Maybe the people who read your blog can give me some good advice. Truths and lies have hurt many people. Can love fix that?”
