It’s really hard to help someone who has cancer, especially if they are family. Someone on Reddit had to say no to her sick sister’s request, so she looked online for help to see if she had made the right choice.
She told the whole story.
“My sister was told she has sarcoma, a type of bone and tissue cancer, about four months ago.” She’s had a lot of procedures and spent a lot of time in the hospital. I’ve spent a lot of time with her and helped her. I don’t mind helping her, but when she was diagnosed, my mom expected me to drop everything and be there for her. This means I’m at the hospital if she is. I have to stop everything I’m doing, even school, and sit with her in the waiting room while she has surgery or a stressful procedure.
I could handle that, though it was annoying, so what the heck. Is it because the doctors finally decided that my sister needed chemo? Her hair has started to fall out. She cut it off, but she’s very sad about it because she loved her hair. My mom told me the other day that I should shave my own hair so that it could be used to make a wig for her. To give you an idea, my hair falls below my buttocks. But the thing is, you should only cut your hair when a family member dies. That’s a tradition that everyone in my dad’s side of the family follows. To be honest, I like my hair and don’t want to shave it because I’ve had it long since I was a kid.
When I told my sister and mom about this, they both told me right away that I should do it and that that kind of tradition doesn’t mean anything since my sister might die anyway.
They asked me to say no. Both of them have asked more than once, and my sister even begged. I said again that I wouldn’t do it and that asking me to was rude.
Now my sister is mad and says that it’s clear I don’t care that she’s having a hard time and that we’re not understanding. But I’ve done everything I could for her, so the fact that she’s leaving hurts. She is very angry, though, and has never asked me about something like this before. I don’t know what to say.
