When my husband died, I didn’t give any money to his affair child.

It can be very hard to handle the weight of betrayal along with the complexities of inheritance and responsibility. So it is with a woman who, after the death of her husband, is faced with a painful and unexpected problem.

She told us what happened.

My husband died almost three years ago, and now I’m raising our eight-year-old child by myself. Since he died, I’ve learned things about him that would have made our marriage end if he were still alive.

A process server came to find him about six weeks ago with a court order to give DNA for a paternity test. I gave him a copy of the death certificate and told him to go.

Soon after, a woman with a child came to my door and said it was my late husband’s son. Is it? I have no idea and don’t care either. The child looks a lot like my husband, but he’s still very young, so he must have been conceived right before he died.

I told her he had died and showed her the way to his grave. She began asking for “her half” of his estate almost right away. I couldn’t help but laugh and tell her that she was welcome to believe that half of nothing was nothing.

It’s possible that people will see me as the bad guy because there was no will and there were assets that didn’t go through probate. One of them was a rental home that his parents gave us and named us as joint tenants with rights of survivorship. It became mine when he died.

I’ve since sold the house, and the money from the sale will pay for our child’s college. I’m okay legally because I’ve already talked to my lawyer. I feel sorry for this child, but my own needs come first.
