Meera, 28, has always been the reliable one for advice among her friends and family. Recently, she found herself in need of guidance after discovering something unsettling about her family.
In a letter to us, Meera explained, “Hello. I never imagined feeling so confused, but I need help. I recently found out about my parents’ will, and it’s keeping me up at night. I was raised with traditional values, believing that my brother and I would equally share our parents’ inheritance. However, the will left everything to my brother, citing that as a man, he would need to support his future family, while I, being married, would not receive anything. My parents even stated that my responsibility now lies with my husband’s family.”
Meera was shocked and hurt, feeling her worth was diminished because of her gender. Her parents didn’t understand her distress, with her mother saying, “Arjun takes care of you. Your brother needs this more.” Her father added, “You should be happy for your brother.”
Meera is conflicted about whether to fight for her share or accept their decision to avoid family conflict. She feels betrayed and questions if her years of support and value as a daughter mean nothing now. She’s seeking advice on how to handle this painful situation.
