A woman who gave up her biological son for adoption years ago was taken aback when he, now an adult, started calling her “Mom.” Despite their recent reconnection, she felt uncomfortable with the title, as she had not been a part of his life and his adoptive mother was the only mom he had known.
The woman explained that she had arranged his adoption through an agency and had met him for the first time when he was 18. They’ve kept in touch since, and he has become close with her family. However, she felt that calling her “Mom” was odd and potentially hurtful to his adoptive mother, whom she respects greatly.
After expressing her feelings, she hasn’t heard from him and worries that she might have upset him. She clarifies that she made the decision to give him up with great difficulty and that he had a loving family who provided him with a wonderful life. She suggested that he could simply call her by her first name, as she felt it would be more appropriate given their circumstances.
