Problems with inheritance can get messy very quickly. There was a death in the family and Daphne was left the house. She told her stepmother to pay the rent or leave. When her stepmother said no, she kicked her out. But what seemed easy turned out to be very complicated when a surprise twist was revealed. Daphne was left feeling lost and asked for help.
This is Daphne’s letter:
“My dad died and left me his little house.
I told his wife that she could go live with her son or use the $10,000 he left her to pay the rent. “How dare you,” she said, she refused. I lived here for 18 years!” So, I kicked her out.
It had been a year since I had heard from her. She called me yesterday and said she had to see me.
I went. It made my blood run cold when I learned that my dad had bought the new, small apartment she was living in.
She said he bought it for her with the rest of his savings before he died so she would have a safe place to live if she ever got kicked out. She promised that the apartment would be mine after she died if she stayed in the house she shared with my dad. But if she had to leave, she could give it to anyone. She is now leaving it to her son.
Once the shock wore off, I was furious. I only did what I could to protect my rights. She had cash on hand, so she could have paid; the house is not a free hotel.
Worst of all, I was lied to; I didn’t know about this apartment, and I feel lied to that the house my dad paid for is going to her son instead of me.
What should I do?
Daphne.”
