We often count on our friends to be there for us when things get tough, expecting them to understand and stay true. But sometimes what we expect doesn’t match up with reality. It tells stories of friendships that fell apart because of betrayal, disappointment, or deep emotional wounds. Some of these things can hurt, but they also teach us important lessons and help us grow as people once we get through them.
1. A good friend spent a week abroad. While I was at a party, I saw her husband making out with another woman. I took a picture. My friend told me she wants to get a divorce when she got back. I showed her the “incriminating picture” at that point. What she did next, though, hit me hard. “And someone else there caught you talking and smiling with that same girl later on,” she said as she gave me the picture. “Is this what you think friendship means?” I tried to tell her that I was just hearing her out to see what was going on before I said anything. I didn’t want to make her marriage worse before I knew the whole story. But my friend told me I should have told her first, and then she stopped talking. Our mutual friends found out and agreed with her that I didn’t act like a true friend, even though I still think I did the right thing. I lost the whole group in the end.
2. My friend texted me to tell me she needs to call me about her wedding. I thought she was going to ask me to be in it, but she told me I couldn’t. I mean, my mom died not long ago, and I can’t bring bad luck to her happy event.
Even though she didn’t want to be rude, she would still send me the invitation, but I couldn’t go. As soon as I got the invitation, I threw it away instead of telling them I couldn’t make it. © By ypsm on Reddit
3. I was on my way home from visiting a friend who lives an hour and a half away. I got about 10 minutes into my trip home before I had to stop because my car was having trouble. It poured down rain, and I was in a really bad part of the city late at night. It was early in the morning when I called my friend to come get me. She said she couldn’t. I finally had to walk to the nearby motel, which was known to be a risky spot.
My “friend” wouldn’t drive 10 minutes to pick me up, so I had to stay alone in a dirty motel in a bad part of town. This still amazes me. By kls17 on Reddit
4. I wasn’t feeling well that time. They stayed with me and called a taxi to go home, which was their home. The cab driver asked me to pay for the ride when I woke up. I had to pay for two rides, one to work and one to my house. The cab driver informed me what friendship is and how they were bad friends. coiso on Reddit
5. I broke up with my live-in girlfriend in a bad way, and now one of my best friends and his wife want her to move in with them. Two years later, she’s still there, a mile from my house. I don’t think I’ve talked to him since then.
I’m going to let his wife live with me if he gets divorced. KidCuervo on Reddit
6. Amy, my best friend, called my house when I was five to see if I could come over and play. It was simple for me to run over to her because she lived across the street. She also had a playhouse for kids in the backyard, which was our favorite place to hang out. I ran out the door, across the street, around the side of her house, and up to the playhouse door. As soon as I got there, Carolyn jumped out of the doorway and dumped a pail of water all over me. When I was five years old, I thought she had ruined my brand-new dress when I realized she had tricked me. © MiniRipperton through Reddit
