Some mothers-in-law become close friends with their daughters-in-law and help each other out, while others like to keep their distance, and still others seem to have a knack for getting under your skin. This article has a range of stories about mothers-in-law, from the really sweet to the really annoying.
1. It was important to me to make my future mother-in-law happy when I started dating my future husband. I told her I knew how to knit when I didn’t and gave her clothes I bought that were knitted. I was caught because I forgot to take off the price tag.
Instead of making a big deal out of it, my mother-in-law walked up to me, smiled, and showed me the price tag. She then said, “My mother-in-law caught me once buying dumplings instead of making them myself.” © VK and Mamdarinka
2. When I woke up one morning, neither my husband nor our 7-month-old son were at home. A note from my husband said that he went for a walk with our son. They weren’t there when I made lunch for them. The phone call from my husband went unanswered.
Then I saw that everything for the baby was gone. I called my wife’s mom. She told me I wasn’t a good wife and mother, so my husband and son would now live with her.
I was shocked and called the police right away. When I got divorced, I told my husband he couldn’t be near me or my son. I then took my son back. © VK and Mamdarinka
3. For Christmas gifts, my wife’s mom used to buy really strange things. I got a gallon of windshield washer fluid one year. © Pretty careful / Reddit
4. Before my birthday, my wife’s mom asked me what present I would like. There was perfume in my mind. She gives me… a waffle maker at my birthday party. It shocks me, but I can’t do anything about it. I told her thank you and set it down. The next few days, I chose to make waffles. That’s right, my husband made me buy this waffle maker. There was money and a note inside the box when I opened it. The money will be used to buy lipstick and perfume. “Love and kisses.” My mother-in-law is really cool and nice like that. 5. My mother-in-law asked my husband if she could be in the delivery room when our baby was born while I was in the bathroom. Then she said that the fact that I wasn’t there had nothing to do with when she asked me to do something. From HyggeSmalls on Reddit
6. The parents of my boyfriend helped us move into our new home. She put all of his things (clothes, books, etc.) in one bedroom and all of mine in another. Then, really confused, she asked us why we had only brought one bed in the truck and if we had ordered him another one. No one was brave enough to tell her. Not a known author/Reddit
7. I had been dating my future husband for about a year when he asked his parents to meet me. My boyfriend at the time cared a lot about what his mother thought, so I was nervous about this meeting.
When she saw me, she said, “I don’t like you.” “Well, let’s get to know each other better,” I said with a sigh. After some time, you might change your mind. “Well, you’re a brave girl,” she laughed as she looked at me. “All right, let’s see.” What do you know? Being calm and sure of myself when I responded, instead of flinching, helped us talk normally. Plus, I’m best friends with her now! My husband makes fun of the idea that I won her heart by being honest and determined. © VK and Mamdarinka
