Hotels are often thought of as places to relax and get away from the stresses of everyday life. For the people who work behind the scenes, though, things can be very different. We’ve put together real stories from hotel workers that range from awkward to completely shocking. Reading them has made us appreciate how hard these people work even more.
1. A woman who was working at a small boutique hotel came to the desk and looked very upset. “I can’t find my husband,” she said. His clothes are still there even though he’s not in the room. He walks while sleeping.
Right away, I go up to the CCTV station in our linen closet to look at the cameras. When I open the door and turn on the light, I’m shocked to see her husband asleep on our bundled duvet covers with only half of a duvet that covers him. He wasn’t sure where he was when I woke him up. I put him in a blanket and took him back to his wife. Later, the couple checked out, and the guy was very embarrassed. He told me not to worry about it because he had a great story to tell. From sbouvette on Reddit
2. I worked at a hotel before. I found a hairy, dark caterpillar in one of the guest rooms one day. I was careful not to lose it as I carried it outside. It didn’t move after I put it on the sidewalk. It scared me when I picked it up again to make sure it was still alive. It turned out to be a woman’s fake eyelash. From Love-Dizzy on Reddit
3. In the eight years I’ve owned a bed and breakfast, the craziest thing I’ve ever found was an old, worn-out notebook with the words “Why I Love Salad” written on it. There were 40–80 pages inside that were all about how great salad was. At times, the author even made it sound like they thought salad was alive in some way. It looked like it had been written in bits and pieces over a few years. From ShaneMcDeath on Reddit
4. A certain man always asked for the same room and stayed at least once a week. After he checked out one day, we searched the room because we thought he might have been up to no good.
We were shocked to find that he had hidden a stuffed animal under the bed. After we threw it away, he only came back once. I felt sorry for him. From Lancerman360 on Reddit
5. I cleaned cheap motel rooms for four years after college. There was a time when we had a guest stay for a whole week without letting anybody into his room. We brought him new towels and trash bags every day, and he would meet us at the door to take them. He finally left, and we were scared about what we might find in the room. But it was spotless. He hadn’t touched anything and had even used bleach to clean. The towels we gave him were all neatly folded and looked like they had never been used. The bed was even the same way we left it. Very strange. © feedmeyourspaghetti / Reddit
