What Mark David Chapman Had To Say About John Lennon

In life as well as in death, John Lennon made an incalculable impact on the globe.

The artist, who is regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time, became well-known while playing with The Beatles and went on to have a successful solo career after the band broke up in 1969. His life was tragically cut short on December 8, 1980, when he was shot and died in front of the Dakota, where he lived in New York City.

At the scene of the crime, Mark David Chapman, the murderer, confessed. He later admitted to being a Beatles enthusiast who was “seeking fame” before a parole board. In September 2022, he declared, “I knew what I was doing, and I knew it was evil.” “I was willing to give everything and take a human life even though I knew it was wrong because I wanted the fame so badly.”

Julian and Sean Lennon, the late musician’s two sons, have dedicated their lives to preserving their father’s legacy. Lennon was predeceased by his wife, Yoko Ono.

After viewing the 2021 documentary series The Beatles: Get Back, Julian told PEOPLE, “I remembered him as a kid—goofy, funny, sarcastic, charming.” “I fell in love with him again because that was the guy I remember before it all went pear-shaped.”

Paul McCartney, John Lennon’s old bandmate, also disclosed that the “Imagine” singer had previously wondered what would be said about him when he passed away.

“It kind of shocked me, but I remember him telling me, Paul, ‘I worry about how people are going to remember me when I die,'” McCartney remembered in 2023 during an iHeart Radio podcast called McCartney: A Life in Lyrics. “All right, hold on, just hold it there,” I urged. People will believe that you were excellent since you have already accomplished enough to support that claim.
