A Harley-Davidson billboard has stirred controversy nationwide with its bold language, inviting people to ride a Harley and lead a more daring life. The ad, placed by Bayside Harley-Davidson in Portsmouth, featured the tagline: “Leave all the bulls**t in the wind behind you.” Shawn Robinson, the dealership’s general manager, championed the slogan, suggesting it encapsulates the liberating experience of motorcycle riding by leaving daily frustrations behind.
Despite Robinson’s enthusiasm, the billboard, located along I-264 East, drew immediate backlash from the Portsmouth community, with complaints flooding in through calls and social media. Local councilman Bill Moody noted the billboard was within its rights, being on Bayside’s property.
Robinson expressed regret over any offense caused but hoped the controversy might still generate positive attention for the dealership. He also remarked on the disproportionate focus on the billboard’s language over more pressing local economic challenges, such as the approval of a downtown casino.
Public opinion remains divided. Some argue the billboard speaks directly to its intended audience without crossing lines of propriety, while others, particularly parents of young children, criticize its placement along a public highway for exposing minors to coarse language. The debate raises questions about the balance between creative advertising and community standards.
